An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) or fixed wiring testing, is a vital report for businesses and every property should be covered by an EICR to ensure the safety of yourself, employees and the building. Although it is not a legal requirement, many legal documents refer to an Electrical Condition Report as a means to satisfy their requirements – this includes the Electricity at Work act.
What Is Inspected?
An EICR inspects the consumer unit or fuse board as well as wiring and electrical accessories, for faults and deviations from wiring standards. Some of the things that are inspected include the adequacy of earthing and bonding, devices for protection against fire and shock, the damage that might affect employees within the property, wear and tear of electrical fittings and identification of exposed live wires.
An EICR must be carried out by a skilled and competent electrical contractor who has undertaken the appropriate training and is registered and licensed to carry out fixed wiring testing. Not all electricians are qualified to complete these tests, but the team at One Way Electrical are qualified and adept at carrying out an Electrical Installation Condition Report in Stoke, Staffordshire and surrounding areas and causing minimal disruption to your day when doing so.
How often your property requires an EICR will vary depending on the type of premises. Some insurance companies make an EICR mandatory so you should check your agreement as to ensure you are fully covered in the event of an incident.
For businesses, it is not a legal requirement to have an EICR but as an employer, under the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act, you are responsible for the health and safety of your employees. Further to this Electricity at work regulations requires precautions to be taken against the risk of injury from electricals used as part of work activities. The recommended frequency of EICR’s for businesses is at least every 5 years.
Industrial businesses are recommended to carry out EICR once every three years.
